Yasmin Bawa

(Picture above is Yasmin snapped at graduate fashion week in her own designs on Vogue.com.)

I first heard and met Yasmin at ‘Fashion on the lock’ an event organised by designer and CEO of concrete rose and blogger Rachel (just rachy), an event where new graduate designers had stalls in camden market to sell their work. I loved Yasmin’s pieces and bought myself a rucksack.

*I have the bag at the end on the right hand side

Yasmin Bawa graduated from Middlesex University this year with a degree in mens fashion. Her graduate collection ‘He Shall Be A Peacock’ is inspired by a V&A exhibition, futurism, camera less photography, pictograms and triangular prints for men and women clothing and accessories which include shoes and bags.

Film Stills:

Yasmin decided to bring her work to life with a video by Liam Simpson to showcase her graduate collection there is a slight influence from Where the wild things are.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m a journalist. I graduated from UCL a year ago with a History degree. I now work for various publications and brands on a freelance basis. My work has been published in Harper’s BAZAAR, POP, Dazed & Confused, Time Out, FHM and House magazines, among others. I also edit the Nike 1948 website, and contribute to High Snobiety and FHM on a daily basis.
Describe an average day? & what do you enjoy doing when your not working?
I work from home all day, usually sitting at my kitchen table with my laptop. When I’m not working, I’m usually cooking or eating! I really love food.
Who do you admire/what inspires you?
All my friends are ambitious, hard-working and focused. Surrounding yourself with people like that automatically ups the ante.
What inspires you to get through the day?
My electricity bill! On a serious note – I’m in competition with myself and always have been. I don’t like to end a day feeling like I’ve let myself down by being unproductive.
What work/creative achievement are you most proud of?
Getting a First Class Degree from UCL is pretty much the only thing I’d say I’m ‘proud’ of. That was a good day!
How would you persuade people to get creative?
I’m not sure you can persuade anyone to be creative. You either have an impulse to create something (be it words, images, music, films) or you don’t!
Word/Motto/quote you live by?

“If everything seems under control, you’re just not going fast enough.”

Most inspiring part of london?

I recently started running along the canals. They’re amazing – a whole new side of London that I never really knew about, despite having lived here all my life.
Vital tool/accessory at work?
Macbook Pro.
What period inspires you the most?
The here and now!
Has the recession helped or hindered your creativity?
Both. It’s harder to get paid work, but like many people I know, I’ve been inspired to work around financial constraints and really think about how I work and earn my money.
Do you feel that it is no longer enough to be one thing exclusively in the creative industry?
Not at all. Spreading yourself thin is generally not an effective game plan. Focus on one or maybe two things, and do them as well as possible.
What are you working on/up to at the moment?
Writing. Reading. Running.
What do you want to concentrate on in the future?
Becoming a better writer. Travelling more. Enjoying life as much as possible.
Top Tips/Words of Wisdom to other young people who want to do what you do?
Start work experience as early as possible so you don’t have to work for free when you graduate (I started work experience when I was 13 and am now 23).
Be professional – don’t submit shoddy work, miss deadlines etc.
Know your worth.
Phoebe Lovatt is gonna blow..so watch out!! Wishing her all the best and a future of success.

Young Ambitious Creative: The Make-Up Fairy

Tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Fairy, I’m 22 years young and I am a make up artist.
I’ve loved make up since I was a little girl, I remember taking my sisters make up bag to the bathroom and covering my face in all her make up. As I got older I started to buy my own stuff and became known for wearing bright colourful make up.
One day my friend Jo said “when I think of make up I either think of you or Pat McGrath” Not only is that a huge compliment but it inspired me to become a MUA.
I started off experimenting on myself, then my friends and family. I took pictures put them on facebook and soon I started to network with other MUAs and photographers, do test shoots and get paid work.
I have worked with Labrinth, Ayishat and Louize, Tanya Lacey, Carmody and Tasha Homan and The Moonrunners to name a few!
I’m self taught but I’m planning to go to The Illamasqua School of Make-up Art.
I’ve got a long way to but I’m proud of how far I’ve come in a short space of time.

Describe an average day? & what do you enjoy doing when your not working?

Everyday is different and I like it that way!! When I’m not working I like to chill whether it be on my own or with loved ones. Relaxation is important to me.

Who do you admire/what inspires you?

I admire the people closest to me, I see them striving for the best everyday! They make me want to be better and do better.

My work is inspired by music, sounds, colours, my emotions, pictures, fabrics… I take everything I see/hear/feel in and use it to create!

What song sums up your attitude?/whats your theme tune?
Santogold – Creator

What inspires you to get through the day?

What work/creative achievement are you most proud of?

I’m most the work I did for up and coming singer Tanya Lacey (Sony RCA)

How would you persuade people to get creative?
I aim to inspire people by doing the things I love and doing them well.

Word/Motto/quote you live by?
If not now, when?

Most inspiring part of london?

I love Brick Lane. It’s full of amazing people, I feel so at home there. When I have my own office that’s were it will be!
I also love Camden town, when you step out of the tube station it’s like you have entered another world!

Vital tool/accessory at work?

My imagination

What period inspires you the most & why?

The 80s.. tacky, bright, kitschglamorous.. Everything I love!

Describe your personal style? (What you like to wear + Fave shops/markets/shopping street etc)

I like to take different trends/styles and throw them together, I don’t follow rules when it comes to fashion.

Has the recession helped or hindered your creativity?

Creativity has no boundaries, it can’t be stopped. The recession is just another tool to help create something amazing.

Do you feel that it is no longer enough to be one thing exclusively in the creative industry?

Yes, but it’s also important not to be a Jack of all trades, master of none! Be a master at your craft/s

What do you want to concentrate on in the future?

I just want to do something I love and make loads of money doing it! Problem is, I love so many things.
So to answer your question, I don’t know. I’m still finding my feet.

What are the meanings behind your tattoos?

I have six tattoos, they all represent where I was in life when I got them. I can tell you what I was thinking and how I felt when I got each one.

Tell me something I don’t know about you?

I sing, write and I’m learning to play the guitar.

Young Ambitious Creative: Jasmine aka Miss Stylissimo

Tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Jasmine Furelid and I don’t wanna mention my age (lol!) I moved to london about four years ago from Sweden and I absolutely love it! I work in retail at the moment and I am trying to develop my carrier as a fashion stylist. Its quite hard to do both at the same time but luckily I get quite a lot of flexibility in my retail job. I’m basically working 7 days a week. Which is hard work as a lot of time is needed to prep for shoots. But I’m willing determined and passionate 🙂 and know that it will be worth it in the end.

I’m a self-taught stylist, although I have always been into fashion I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. A year ago I decided that I wanted to do be a stylist and from then on I just set my mind to it.  This year things really started to kick off for me 🙂 In 2010, I was working for free that year and  now in 2011 I am finally getting paid for the jobs I do which is a plus. Saying that I still do unpaid jobs if it involves things that I think will boost and bring something to my portfolio. I’ve worked with Preeya Kalidas and I also work with a girlband called VIDA etc. I work with a lot of artists that want to change and alter/develop their image. I do love it but it would be nice to work with more fashion magazines since I like  fashion that some may consider crazy and I enjoy going aaaaaall out haha.

Describe an average day? & what do you enjoy doing when your not working?

An average day is me getting up early, eating my breakfast which always includes a cup of coffee to start my day 🙂 then I get dressed, do my makeup and style myself to the max lol! (I do take a lot of time in the morning I must admit :p) Then I just head to the shop where I work. If there is any prep I need for clients I usually do it before I leave for work. If its for shoots then it all depends. I love that my job varies. I get bored easily so its perfect for me!
When I’m not working I’m enjoying life. I think that life is to short for it to be wasted on negative energy. When I’m with my friends, I might do some shopping, Relax and just chill out.

Who do you admire/what inspires you?

I admire everyone that has got the courage to be different and not care what others think. My friend fatima is a great example because she manages to stay positive no matter what situation she faces. My mum for being supportive in everything I do and all the good people around me that always push me in the right direction. My agent and friend Monica for believing in me. Swedish stylist Decida, american girl aka Vintage Vandalizm etc gives me inspiration. Celeb wise I like rihanna, beyonce, lady gaga, amber rose, nikki minaj and a lot of the other powerful women out there that don’t give a F#CK 🙂

What song sums up your attitude?/whats your theme tune?

Armand Van Helden – You don’t know me. As it’s how I look at other people. They care too much and it pisses me off! Mind your own buisness I say.

What would you do if you were mayor for a day?

Hmmm well probably just do crazy things that I normally do. Haha! I like to do random stuff.

What inspires you to get through the day?

Good question… I constantly keep asking myself that. Lately I’ve been in two minds about it and then I think what keeps me going? At times I feel like I wanna give up but then something tells me to keep on going, its that moment that gives me a good feeling. Other people that work hard also inspire me with there ‘never give up’ attitude!

What work/creative achievement are you most proud of?

Styling preeya kalidas for the brits was quite a big thing for me. But I don’t really know. I just do my thing and enjoy it.

Name a person/organisation that shares your DIY ethos & explain why?

Well I can’t really come up with somebody. But I just admire people in general that work hard for what they believe in.

Picture/video that summarises modern life for you & why?

Massive attack- nikki minaj
Simply because I love nikki minaj and amber rose and together in the video they are unstoppable. I love strong independent ladies that don’t care and I think that symbolises a lot of what’s going on right now.

How would you persuade people to get creative?

I don’t reckon it is something that you can actually do. You’ve either got it or not. You can’t really persuade. You need the determination, the will and definitely the passion in you!

Word/Motto/quote you live by?

Carpe diem – seize the day, life is to short so you might as well live it to the fullest. You can sleep when you are dead. Follow your heart. Live for yourself, don’t care about what others think and say & Never give up on what you believe in.

Most inspiring part of london-a hidden gem/place ppl don’t know?/Fave LDN discoveries?

East London, brick lane, notting hill portobello, everywhere is inspiring for me as each place brings something different.

Vital tool/accessory at work?

My styling kit, where I’ve got pins, thread, tape etc. Also iron and steamer.

What period inspires you the most & why?

Uhm I love mixing everything together, like 50s, 90s, now and future 😉

Describe your personal style?

I had that question before but I can’t really explain it. I’m me, that’s what I usually say lol! I think other people see me as more street\urban style but I mix so much more then that. Some people call me ghettofab haha I can’t describe it but I agree I’m a bit street since I usually need one item on me all the time that’s a bit sporty, I hate looking cute. I love edgyness and being unique. I hate looking like everyone else! I get bored really easily so my hair for example change at least twice a month lol
I love vintage shopping and trying to get bargains all the time. Vintage shopping is probably the only shopping I do and then I mix it up with maybe some H&M, primark (beileve it or not), new look, etc. Designerclothes are too expensive haha! I also like to buy menswear and customise them as well.

Has the recession helped or hindered your creativity?

Nope, it has not hindered my creativity at all, I’ll always stay creative.

What are you working on/up to at the moment?

I’ve got loads of things coming up but I have not got everything finalised yet. I’m hoping to work with VIDA a lot. I’m currently just working on exciting projects really and there maybe chances that will allow me to work with some new artists.

What do you want to concentrate on in the future?

I’m actually in this stage right now I seem to spend a really long time thinking about this. Some days when I’m exhausted I just feel like giving up. I still want to do my styling but its so much around it that I’m not that sure about. As there is only so much  styling you can do. Personally if I at least have a goal I’m fine, anything and everything can pop up along the way and although you may have a plan of how you want things to turn out it won’t turn out exactly as you wanted it to. I take everyday as it comes as long as I’m happy and enjoy what I’m doing!

Do you feel there are enough networking events/power lunches/opportunities for Young Creatives in your industry?

Well I think there are some out there but I never really go to them lol! I’m the worst when it comes to networking lol! I’m trying but I’m not really out there that much but I do network whenever I’m out. I love meeting new intresting people. I do a lot of my networking/promotion online, trying to promote my blog so people remeber me and have me in mind for things that pop up.

Tell me something I don’t know about you?

op Tips/Words of Wisdom for people who want to do what you want to do?

As Nike said : Just do it 🙂 whatever you want you can achieve! Never give up on your dream. Its in your head so don’t spend too much time thinking about how to get there just think about where your going to be, it’s your goal! If you see the long way you might give up…

Im PINS, an Artist (illustrator, Graphic Designer, dabbles with Spray Paint), a Brand (Motivational, Progressive, Clothing line) and i’ve got a thing for donuts! I’m ‘Getting on abit but still feel young’ yrs old. When I left, I took up customising clothing and took to it really well, like a natural process, and carried that on for about two years supplying ‘ghetto’ shops with fresh creations like hoodies/kicks/hats/etc and sold at various festivals/music events with various other customisers, that was my ‘work experience’. Then got approached to provide my artistic services to Schools/Youth Centres in various parts of London, which I continue to run independently to this day.
